Frank Roberts hailed from both the Katzie and the Musqueam/ Coast Salish bands. I got to know Frank as a fabulous carver who came to the door hoping to sell his latest works to buy food. His first carvings that he presented were of some interesting looking fish and no matter how funny they looked I bought them and encouraged him to continue carving. Later he branched out to talking sticks after I asked him if he could carve 20 talking sticks that I was wanting to hand out at a reunion. I have since gifted his talking sticks to people all over the world. What was profound about his carvings was that they were not the smooth and polished works that you would see in gift shops. His carvings had strong uneven features that carried a significant amount of energy. One of the people I gifted a talking stick to later told me that this was not a talking stick, it was a listening stick, as he gained great insights after sitting quietly in meditation with the stick.
Frank and I often sat on the front porch for a while talking about work and life stuff. I asked a couple of people at a recent Musqueam event if they knew Frank and was told that he passed a few years ago. So sad, Frank was a good and decent person and is missed.
