Nicolaos Malamas died peacefully surrounded by his family at Burnaby General Hospital on September 4, 2021, at the golden age of 85.

Nicolaos is survived by his wife Stavroula, children Kathy (Peter), Christine (Nick) and Dora (Stamatis) and five beautiful grandchildren Aron, Niko, Jenna, Alex, and Johnny.

In 1923 Nicolaos’ parents Katina and Demetrios Malamas gathered their few belongings and emigrated from Asia Minor to Thessaloniki, Greece where he was born.  Nicolaos had 3 siblings Eugenia, Kosta, and Lazarus. In 1963 he met and married Stavroula and the two moved to Ocean Falls, British Columbia where he worked as a millworker. In 1965 the couple welcomed their eldest daughter Kathy into their home. After a year in Ocean Falls the small family moved to the big city of Vancouver where they purchased their first home on Balaclava Street. Soon after their family grew with the birth of two more daughters Christine and Dora. His children remember him as a man of few words, but one who was patient, kind and generous. He valued education and encouraged his girls to attend university.

Nicolaos was a man of many talents. He was a master carpenter and builder. He had several restaurants over the years as many of his contemporaries. However, his skill as a carpenter was where he shined. He had many hobbies such as hunting, gardening, still-life painting, and making wine. He was an all or nothing kind of man. When he wanted to learn a skill, he worked tirelessly until he mastered it. Nicolaos was an active and dedicated member of the Greek Orthodox Church and enjoyed visiting the monasteries.

All are welcome to attend and celebrate Nicolaos’ life. A prayer service will be held Wednesday, September 8th 7:00 p.m. at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral. The funeral is scheduled for September 9th at 11:30 a.m. at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Interment to follow at Valley View Cemetery Surrey, B.C. Due to COVID restrictions there will not be a reception. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. George’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral. The family would like to thank the Burnaby Hospital staff their kindness, dedication, and care.
