Hartley, Dr. Edward

July 13, 2019 saw the passing of Dr. Edward Hartley of Surrey, B.C.  Dr. Hartley studied medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and after graduation moved to Vancouver, B.C. in 1964 where he began a family medical practice.  He married Vivian Robertson in 1967 and together they had three children:  James, and the twins Andrea and Maria.  Dr. Ed was well-known as a beloved doctor who was devoted to his patients.  He was also well-known as a local iconographer and as the founder of St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Church, which for a time met for worship in the chapel Dr. Ed built in his backyard.  He retired from his family practice in 2004.  He is predeceased by his wife Vivian who died in November 2013 after a battle with cancer.  He is survived by his three children and seven grandchildren. 

Funeral services are to be held at St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Church at 7221 - 198B Street in Langley. Visiting hours are on Friday July 19 from 4 - 6:30pm. The panikhida will follow at 7:00 p.m. and the funeral will be on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Valley View Memorial Gardens, 14644 72 Ave, Surrey.

Flowers may be sent to the church on Friday during visiting hours.

My deepest condolences to the Hartley family
I worked with Dr Hartley as one of his medical
Receptionist when he had his office at 9808 King George highway. He was a great man and had so much compassion and empathy for everyone he will be missed

Dear Hartley Family

Dr. Hartley was humble in his unceasing service and love towards all his fellow mankind.

I only have profound memories of his kindness and generosity.

I'm saddened to read this obituary today but rejoice in knowing that we all shall reunite again.

We feel blessed to have had the opportunity to know Dr. Ed. His positive attitude never ceased to amaze us. He was a true delight to be around and he will be missed dearly by myself and our team.

Ed was the kindest and most generous man, he was my doctor and friend for many years. I lost touch with him, and his family. Just found out he’s passed away, he sure is in haven with Vivien . My sympathies to the kids and grandkids xxxx

Ed I am sad that you have past I am so glad I got to spend time with you I miss going to church with you you really helped me find my path with the Lord all our talks and walks we would go on light shined on you all you ever did was to help with what ever you could I am so blessed to be able to call you my friend love to you Dr Edward Hartley and Vivian you are now forever with the Lord may you walk and rest in peace I know I will see you again in heaven
