Also known as Uncle Dick and the Mad Jogger, Richard was born in Vancouver B.C. He is predeceased by parents, John V.P.D 1983 and Valerie 1968; and brother Gordon 1993. Survived by his sister Jeanette, her children; John, Matthew and Mark Brunt, Gordon's children; Garrett, Lance, Valerie, Jessy, Julie and many grand nieces and nephews.
Richard was a dedicated teacher for 50 years, teaching in New York and New Jersey U.S.A, Tripoli Libya, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Atlantic Canada, and lastly for many years in then Boston Bar/North Bend area of B.C. Remembered by many past students, their parents and fellow teachers with respect, admiration, and appreciation. Also by his dear friends Richard cared so much for, who were there for him in these last difficult months; Kai, Merik, Louise, Helmut and Elain and especially Samantha, who was so attentive and many more. Thank you all for caring for Richard.
Though he never married or had children of his own, he cared for and was supportive of his brother and sister, and all his nieces and nephews. He was our rock, the glue that held our family together. He was an example of honour and faith. Richard exemplified true love as he lived 1st Corinthians 13:4-7.
Love suffers long and is kind, love does not envy, love does not parade itself, is not puffed up, does not behave rudely; does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Richard's Funeral Mass will take place at St. Joseph's Parish, 32550 7th Ave, Mission on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 11:00 am with a private cremation to follow.

Mainly from the obituary account of Richard’s charity, I recognize the Dick Dyer who was in Grade 12 at Vancouver College in 1954-55. One day, I as a shy little 10-year-old introvert was walking home from VC (a Grade 1–12 boys school), westward on 41st Avenue, when Dick, 17 and walking home the same way, caught up with me. While giving me space, he gently welcomed me to walk beside him, and we chatted. Usually I took the bus, but we walked homeward together several more times (always in an entirely proper way), and it made me feel respected and more confident. As I write, it’s coming back to me that Dick had been a seminarian before returning to VC for the final year of high school. Once or twice, on sunny spring afternoons, my route home from school took me past the southwest corner of the playing field, where Dick was practicing high jump for the K-of-C track meet, and he paused to respond to my questions about it. I can relive those empowering occasions like yesterday because they’ve often come to mind as I reflect on great people I’ve known. I feel present with Dick now, strolling again down the hill to Kerrisdale, but both of us six-footers this time. We’re rejoicing in his life well lived in the 67 years since we last said goodbye, and I observe that he spent it doing for others pretty much what he’d done for me. It is a prayer experience because Dick is with God, which means we are with God. Via con Dios, Dick.
