George Spyracopoulos
1937 - 2026
George passed peacefully at his home in Surrey, British Columbia, in the care of family and friends. He leaves behind his loving daughter, Georgia; his sons, Ted (Rosa) and Leo (Nina); and his grandchildren, Alexander, Evan, and Alyssa.
George arrived in Canada in the early 1960s, and shortly thereafter met Helen, his wife of nearly six decades. Together, George and Helen devoted themselves to family and to the Greek community.
Raised in humble circumstances in Arcadia, Greece, a land he revered as the abode of the Greek gods and the ancestral heart of the Greek people, George developed a lifelong love of Hellenic history, language, and culture. The hardships of his youth shaped his wisdom, deepened his humility, and remained a source of strength throughout his life.
George was an avid walker all his life. Each day he admired the vastness of the sky and remained awed and humbled by the majesty of nature. He possessed an indomitable spirit; despite difficult illness and fatigue, he continued steadfastly with his love of walking.
His message to family before passing was humble:
“Even in the hardest of times, there was always something good in my life. I leave this with you:
everything is sacred, and everything is good. I urge you, take care of the children, and you will come through victorious.”
It is touching that in his final hours, he longed for the return home, the nostos of the Greeks: the sacred emotional pull of returning home after suffering.
Longing for nostos
