Randy spent his early years in southern Saskatchewan, where he was diagnosed while still in elementary school, with Becker’s Muscular Dystrophy, which is an inherited, mild, slow, progressive neuromuscular disease that affects mobility. His three uncles, two cousins and brother also have this hereditary disease. His uncles were mobile into their 70’s and we were optimistic Randy would be too.
Symptoms of this muscle disease include weakness and fatigue, frequent falls, difficulty running, hopping and jumping, unusual gait, enlarged calf muscles. Randy displayed all these symptoms to some degree or another as a child and later on also developed skeletal deformities of the chest, which are also quite common. Development of congestive heart failure or arrhythmias is considered rare with Becker's, but Randy was diagnosed with heart problems a few years ago.
Randy moved to BC in the early 80’s with his family and settled in Mission. He continued to live and work in the lower mainland, graduating from Mission Senior Secondary School, then worked at various jobs in the area. He was eventually employed by The Answer Garden Products in Aldergrove, where he worked for almost 20 years., until an injury in 2015. Mobile until his injury, he worked very hard to regain his mobility without success, leaving him unable to walk and dependent on a wheelchair for his mobility. Adjusting to not being able to walk or return to work was very difficult for him. Going to work everyday gave his life purpose. He enjoyed being part of a team, the camaraderie, the financial independence etc.
Following his injury he had to sell his 2009 Toyota Matrix he special ordered as he was no longer able to drive it, he missed being able to drive terribly. After extensive driver training to drive a modified vehicle he did get a van eventually that he was able to drive from his wheelchair, but this was short lived when he developed medical complications, which resulted in further weakness etc. and the van had to be sold.
Randy was a huge Canuck fan and attended many of their games over the years. He enjoyed watching sports such as football, baseball and soccer as well as attending games when opportunities arose. One year he took a bus trip to a Seattle Mariners game. Another time attended a soccer game in Vancouver with his Dad and Jodi. Went to a Blue Jays game in Toronto with his mother. Attended a Montreal sporting event with his Uncle Tom and cousins Matthew and Ryan. He enjoyed going to the movies and watching movies on TV, listening to music and going to the odd concert. He liked to travel and was often a travel companion to his mother. He travelled mostly throughout Canada and the US. There were numerous trips to the prairies and eastern Canada to visit relatives and see the sights etc., trips to Yuma Arizona, Palm Springs, LA, and San Diego California, Reno and Las Vegas Nevada. He enjoyed a cruise from Vancouver to  Alaska one year.Randy enjoyed family, especially time spent with his dad and the Miller family. He looked forward to the Miller reunions. Enjoyed regular telephone conversations with Grandma Stella (Miller) until her decline in health a few years ago.
Randy was kind and considerate, very understanding and accepting of people, always respectful. He was friendly and helpful. He worked hard and applied himself to everything he did. He was a great support to me his mother earlier this year when I lost my husband unexpectedly.
Randy maintained an apartment in Aldergrove until a year ago. He was living in Coquitlam in an accessible unit in a new building at the time of his death. He was enjoying his new home and community. He died in his apartment unexpectedly of heart failure.

A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at 1:00 pm at the Heritage Hall, 3015-273 Street, Aldergrove, BC. Burial to take place at Forest Grove Cemetery on Mother's Day 2025.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
